Real Madrid, the defending champions of Europe, convincingly beat Chelsea 2-0 tonight in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinals at Bernabeu. The score-line flattered Madrid as Chelsea had a number of missed opportunities that they couldn't finish which easily could of turned the game on it's head.
Madrid gained momentum and took the lead in the 20th minute. Karim Benzema capitalized on a rebounded shot by Vinicius Junior that was deflected by Kepa, and calmly slotted the ball into an empty net.
Chelsea's task was made even more difficult in the 59th minute, as Ben Chilwell was given a straight red card for a foul from behind on Rodrygo, who was charging towards the goal. Lampard made tactical changes to the game in order to hold the ball up but this seemed ineffective.
The match turned heavily in favour of Madrid after Chilwell's red card, and they wasted no time in extending their lead with a second goal in the 71st minute. Marco Asensio, who had just substituted Rodrygo, unleashed a strong shot from outside the penalty area that found the back of the net leading Madrid to the 2-0 win at home in the 1st leg of the Champions League quarter finals.
Things haven't been great for the Premier League side as of late and things appear to be getting worse - fast. With Frank Lampard's recent return and the remaining fixtures anticipated to be tough for his side, can we finally conclude that this season is a complete write-off for the blues - or could we see a turnaround of good results from Chelsea to end their 2022/23 campaign on a high? Chelsea face 7th-place Brighton on Saturday, and based on the Seagulls current form it would suggest it could be another struggle for Lampard's side going into their return fixture at home to Real Madrid next Tuesday.
